Happiness

I co-wrote this song with Gregg Sutton. Gregg was an acclaimed musician. He was an accomplished songwriter, having written for the likes of Joe Cocker, Joe Bonomasso, Percy Sledge, Dolly Parton, Al Green, Tom Jones, Billy Ray Cyrus, and many more. He was an expert guitar and bass player, and spent decades in a variety of bands, including Lone Justice, KGB, and the Pets. He toured as the bassist with Bob Dylan in 1984 and served as musical director for comedian Andy Kaufman, a childhood friend.

I was very fortunate to have connected with Gregg. I had sent him many lyrics over the years I knew him. Gregg gave great feedback, and he was very supportive. He worked on several, but this song is the only one he finished before he died in October of 2023.

Fortunately, I was able to meet him face-to-face before that. On a road-trip to New Mexico in the spring of 2023, I stopped by his place in LA. He was a gracious host, and I was able to ask him many questions about his life and music career. The highlight, though, was when we played this song together in his living room. What a thrill!

lyrics

Happiness walk in my door

I’ve been blessed, oh and I been scorned

It’s life or death – no less no more

‘Til happiness in a tight pink dress

Walked through my door

Don’t know why she came to me

It was such a dark night

All I know it was meant to be

And I know it’s gonna be alright

Happiness walk in my door

I’ve been blessed, oh and I been scorned

It’s life or death – no less no more

‘Til happiness in a tight pink dress

Walked through my door

I don’t know why I deserve all this

I know I’ve done so much wrong

We all deserve a taste of bliss

And we know, it won’t last long.

Sometimes we all have sorrow, oh and

Sometimes we all have fear, oh and

Someday we gonna stop crying

Dry your tears, dry your tears

Happiness walk through your door

We’ve been blessed, and we been scorned

Life or death – no less no more

Happiness in a tight black dress

Stiletto heels and all the rest

Happiness walked through your door

Happiness

Happiness
