This song is very special to me, as it's the first set of lyrics I wrote. I had been carrying some of the words and lines with me for many years before I finally tried to make sense of them and write them down. This is a song about endings, be it a job, a relationship, or a life. I was thinking about Eric Burdon when I wrote this. I've followed Eric's career since high school, got a chance to meet him as well as interview him on several occasions. I was thinking of him winding down his career as he passed the 80 years of living mark. Initially, I sent the lyrics to him in hopes that he would connect with the words and collaborate with the music. However, I never heard from him. When I tried two musicians who had worked with him, both liked the words and even tried adding music. But, after several years, nothing got finished. Fortunately, I met G.T. Albright in the meantime, and he was diligent in creating a song that we could both be proud of. This is the completed version
It’s been a long, longtime journey
This tangled life of mine.
I’ve walked through meadows of newfound love
and forests of friends left behind.
Now I’m sitting on the edge of goodbye
trying hard, hard to decide
is it truth or is it a lie?
I’m sitting on the edge, sitting on the edge of goodbye.
Sorting through the memories
That open up this heart.
I’ve paddled streams of peace and serenity
and crossed rivers of suffering and pain.
Now I’m sitting on the edge of goodbye
trying hard, hard to decide
is it truth or is it a lie.
I’m sitting on the edge, sitting on the edge of goodbye.
There’s never been a better time
To do what must be done
I’ve climbed mountains of fortune and fame
fallen off cliffs of broken dreams.
Now I’m standing on the edge of goodbye
trying hard, hard to decide
to live or to die.
Now I’m standing on the edge, standing on the edge of goodbye.
